Azza Fahmy at the Capella and the Suma Collection

On November 20th, SYRA ARTS co-founders Sylvia van Vliet Ragheb and Randa Fahmyhosted an intimate, invite-only Azza Fahmy jewelry show. Guests enjoyed complimentary cocktails and passed hors d'oeuvres in the Presidential Suite of the Capella hotel in Georgetown and perused Fahmy's newest jewelry line, The Suma Collection. The limited edition collection pays tribute to legendary Egyptian singer Om Kulthoum, labeled the “greatest Arabic female singer in history.” The collection was inspired by the icon’s influential persona as well as many of her individual jewelry items. Called by some Kawkab al-Sharq (star of the East), Om Kulthoum, with a powerful and clear voice, filled with nostalgia and yearning can still be heard daily on radio stations in the multitudes of coffee shops and taxis all over the Arab world. Even though she died over two decades ago, her love lyrics, national odes and religious chants continue to affect millions of people. Egyptian jewelry designer Azza Fahmy considers Om Kalthoum a major inspiration and pays homage to her icon with this latest collection.
