On May 22nd, 2012, his Excellency Ambassador Sameh Shoukry was at the Washington Design Center to inaugurate Syra Arts’ reception celebrating the best of Egyptian contemporary art. In his welcoming speech, the Egyptian Ambassador mentioned how at a time when Egypt is witnessing major historical changes, it is important to appreciate the many facets that make up the rich Egyptian culture. Egypt has long been a huge center for creativity with a significant and vibrant contemporary arts scene.
As the Ambassador and Mrs. Shoukry and members of Washington's diplomatic community, gallery owners, designers and art collectors filtered through the gallery, they were captivated by the diversity and talent of the Egyptian artists exhibited. This collection has attracted a lot of attention and admiration and gave us a great indicator of how receptive American and international art lovers are to the contemporary art of Egypt.
